Interesting post and comment that you linked. I can see it from both sides. One of my first reactions was also, "oh how horrifying -- book destruction" but the shock factor is also part of the appeal for me; that, and how he takes a 2-dimensional page and turns it into a 3-dimensional sculpture.

The book becoming unreadable is another part of the appeal. It makes me want to read the book more because I can't -- what words did he cover up? What pages, what imaginary world, did he glue together? Why do I want to read it more, now that I can't?

if you want to find out more about brian dettmer, the man and artist, check this post out

brian dettmer: book autopsies

he was so incited by herocious that he personally left a rather lengthy comment that, at times, sounds insulting.

not sure whom you'll agree with, dettmer or herocious, but i got a laugh out of it at least.

Hi Tony,
Your comment was stuck in Spam for awhile and I just saw it today.

I don't think they are looking for additional writers at this point, but if/when they are I will definitely post the information here.

Thanks for visiting and congratulations on your book!

Wow. Not only does this book sound interesting, but this is a great idea. I would have loved somethng like that as a kid. I am an author right now who is writing books in the young readers genre. Are they looking for more writers for these books? If they are you should post information for it, so that authors can check it out.

I'm so glad my post on Write To Done came at the right time for you. I think a fear of the blank page is universal amongst all writers regardless of publishing success. I wish you all the best in overcoming your fear.

Yes, let’s own the condition together! Strength in numbers! Maybe if there’s enough of us flaunting our abibliophobia with pride it will make others feel uncomfortable with their lack of reading material.

We could be the start of a worldwide movement, 'one book in the hand of every person at all times….'

Or, you know, we could just be book nerds together.

A win/win situation? ;)

My family used to make jokes about "Richard's security book". When I was a kid I'd bring books with me everywhere. To family dinners. To restaurants. To movies. To the bathtub (though my one experience trying to read in the shower was a failure -- no, I'm not kidding). To Disneyland.

As I grew older, I grew more ashamed of my addiction and stopped bringing books to the dinner table and to family gatherings (though I've been seen picking up books from my parents' bookcase and reading them). But it's nice to know I'm not the only one who suffers from abibliophobia; perhaps now I can own the condition, and flaunt it with pride.

[...] I love reading posts that inspire people to continue writing, especially when it includes quotes from one of my favorite authors. Check out Stephen King’s On Writing for more. It’s part autobiography and part lesson book for aspiring writers. It’s one of the best books on writing I’ve yet read, and I’m not just saying that because The Stand is in my top ten list. [...]
